The SQ3R Method: A Study Reading Strategy That Actually Works The SQ3R method has been one of the most recommended study reading strategies since Francis P. Robinson introduced it in 1946. Eight decades later, it remains effective because it is built on cognitive principles that have only been further validated by modern research. SQ3R stands for Survey, Question, Read, Recite, Review. Each step serves a specific cognitive function, and together they transform passive reading into active learning. If you have ever read a textbook chapter and immediately forgotten everything, the SQ3R method is your solution. The Five Steps of SQ3R Step 1: Survey (2-5 minutes) Before reading a chapter, survey it. Skim the title, headings, subheadings, bold terms, images, charts, and summary. Read the introduction and conclusion paragraphs. Why it works: Surveying activates your prior knowledge and creates a mental framework for the incoming information.
